"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from everyone loves music."  Billy Joel

Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music

Created by music therapist Dr. Helen Bonny, the Bonny Method is a therapy process wherein the client freely imagines experiences such as sensations, feelings, memories, and fantasies while listening to classical music, and describes them in a dialogue with a music therapist.  Throughout the process, the music therapist “guide” supports and encourages the client’s development through careful selections of music, skillful intervention and a caring presence.

Rigorous training is required to practice the method, including several years of intensive classroom work and supervised practice sessions.  Practitioners must be endorsed as Fellows by the Association for Music and Imagery.

In the Bonny Method the spirit of music combines with the creative process to facilitate personal growth, healing and insight.  Participants access and work through various barriers to greater inner wholeness to positively affect mood, personal insight, self-esteem, one’s sense of the meaning of life and/or purpose, and spiritual development.

Among the potential benefits of the Bonny Method are:

  • Improved health of mind-body-spirit
  • Help in coping with diabetes self-management
  • Strengthening of character and constructive behavior
  • Non-pharmacological management of pain and discomfort
  • Piercing through negative thoughts and emotions
  • Relief of fatigue and inertia
  • Increased physical vitality
  • Positive changes in mood and emotional states
  • Reduced anxiety and improved relaxation
  • Deepening of relationships and enriched friendships

Clients suffering from depression; anxiety, including post-traumatic stress and childhood stress; medical conditions such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes and others; chemical dependency, relationship issues, and grief from personal loss may benefit from the Bonny Method techniques.  Individuals without specific therapeutic issues may also attain greater personal integration and self-actualization with Bonny Method participation.
